In collaboration with Plymouth City Council and the Tamar Estuaries Consultative Forum, the MBA is carrying out a project to survey recreational uses within the Plymouth Sound and Tamar Estuaries European Marine Site.
We are looking for volunteers to help undertake questionnaire surveys to understand how people are using the site; what types of activities are being undertaken, where and at what times of the year. This information is important to build up a picture of possible impacts on the species and habitats of conservation importance in the site.
This opportunity will give you the chance to participate in a research project, and collect data that will contribute to the management of a European Marine Site, while meeting new people. Transferable skills include questionnaire survey techniques and data entry. You will learn more about the European Marine Site close to Plymouth, the important habitats and species, and the way that humans impact on this area. To take part, you will also need to be at least 18 years old. A background in marine biology or environmental science and an interest in conservation would be an advantage, but the most important skills are being able to talk to people, being friendly and open, and the ability to record and enter data accurately. Travel expenses (within close proximity to the site) and a daily meal will be covered. We anticipate conducting surveys at a large number of sites around Plymouth Sound and the Tamar Estuary over the next 12 months. Some are readily accessible by foot or bus, others require a car to access. Induction and training will take place at the MBA, Citadel Hill, Plymouth on the 2nd March 2016 at 6 pm.
It is totally up to you how much time you dedicate to the project, and it can vary from one day to one day a month or maybe more over the next 12 months.
