Further to the earlier announcement in the last newsletter, in order to celebrate Bob’s association with PPCA and the wider kayaking community we are planning a memorial paddle on Saturday 25th September.

Clive is due to lead what was to be a normal recreational paddle but has agreed to turn it into a slightly different event. This will mean a shorter paddle culminating in a communal buffet.

To facilitate land access we propose to hold the buffet on Mountbatten beach (https://goo.gl/maps/eMrhi7YVdKRvaz9F7) (SX487532). If the weather is inclement we will recourse to one of the rooms kindly offered by the Mountbatten Centre (https://g.page/mountbattencentre?share) (SX487533). Paddlers please meet at the PPCA sheds at Mountbatten, ready to launch from the western slip at 10:00. Please bring dry clothing suitable to change into if the lunch ends up indoors. Please note that parking is only free for Mountbatten members but there is some on street parking and a free car park across the road.

A representative from the RNLI is due to attend at 13:00 in order to receive a cheque raised from the sale of Bob’s kit in support of the charity. We are also delighted to welcome Bob’s widow Jane who many of you will know.

The club will provide a selection of cocktail pasties but as per previous communal buffets can we ask that you bring something to share as well.

In order to get a balance between savoury and sweet can we suggest that if your birthday is between the 1st and 20th of the month then you bring something savoury. If between 21st and 31st then you bring something sweet. All you cake makers out there feel free to Bake for Bob!

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day.

I am leading the paddling part of this session. As normal please be ready for a briefing at 10:00.

Bob was well known throughout the paddling fraternity so there will be a number of guest paddlers present on Saturday. We will also be joined by non-paddling friends on the beach at lunchtime.

The inshore lifeboat is going to join us at 13:00 so we need to be at Mount Batten beach before then. The perceptive among you will realise that the paddle won’t be very long. At time of writing, I am thinking of Cable Beach and back.

Paddler can use any craft they wish, sea kayak, GP kayak, open boat, sit on top and stand up paddle boards are all welcome. We are likely to be busy so if you wish to use a club boat please reserve via equipment officer Pete Anderson, equipment@ppca-canoe-club.org.uk or 07958 694434.

Don’t forget to brush up on your best Bob story.

    See you on Saturday,

    Clive A.
