New canoe trails launched by British Canoeing

British Canoeing has launched new canoe trails across the country, in a brand new, visually impressive format, to encourage more people to pick up a paddle and embrace the great outdoors.

The 2017 British Canoeing National Volunteer & Recognition Awards have now been launched! This is your opportunity to recognise the everyday heroes at your club or organisation by nominating them for a volunteer or coaching award.

For more information about each award, to download your nomination form or to fill out a form online, please go to our website page.

Last year’s Club of the Year Award went to Halifax Canoe Club. Take a look at their video here!

    Skills development and qualifications

The Paddlepower award scheme is a colourful and youth centred series of personal performance awards designed to meet the needs of young people.

The British Canoeing Star Awards are designed for paddlers aged 16 and over.

1 and 2 star awards encourage paddlers to experience the various types of paddlesport available. Paddlers then ‘specialise’ in particular disciplines from the 3 Star Award onwards.

The focus of the 1, 2 and 3 star awards is developing personal skills and gaining independence, while the 4 star and 5 star awards are leadership awards which enable paddlers to lead groups in appropriate conditions.

Find out more on our skills development pages on the British Canoeing website.

A chance for people from your club to become Paddlesport Activity Assistants.

A new scheme has been launched by British Canoeing to formally recognise individuals who play important roles within the paddlesport community.

The PAA is ideal for clubs as it supports the delivery of paddlesport activities by developing volunteers and is a way of formally recognising this.

Read more here or see case studies below.

    Become a Coach Award Provider

British Canoeing Launched the Coach Award on the 3rd July 2017 and will need a number of Coach Award Tutors and Assessors in order to deliver the award from the 1st January 2018.

The deadline for Provider Applications is the 21st August 2017.

Find out how you can become a Coach Award Provider here.

How pro-active is your club in ensuring the safety and welfare of your members?

    Club Welfare Officers

All British Canoeing clubs should have at least one Club Welfare Officer in place. The importance of this role should not be underestimated and clubs should ensure their members know who they are and how to contact them.

We recommended that a Welfare Officer does not hold another position on the club committee, and is not an active coach or instructor at the club. In addition, the Welfare Officer should not be related to other members of the committee or members of the coaching team. We are aware that for some clubs it may not always be possible to recruit a truly independent Welfare Officer and those clubs should therefore appoint a second or deputy Welfare Officer.

Parents in Sport Week 2- 8 October 2017- send us your stories!

Launched by the Child Protection In Sport Unit (CPSU), national Parents in Sport week aims to encourage sports organisations and clubs to recognise and promote the positive and important role parents play in helping children reach their full potential.

Resources and further information can be found here.

In the meantime, British Canoeing are looking for stories and examples of the valuable role of parents, to share and promote in the lead up to, and throughout the week.

    Send us your stories here!
