ParticipantHi all, I’m standing in for Joy and running the short rec paddle on Sat 2 March. This is my itinerary for the day.
1) Travel to Mount Batten, open the sheds, meet and greet my esteemed paddling companions and get changed.
2) At 10:29 I will decide where to paddle and meticulously plan a route taking into consideration such factors as the weather, the tide and who has turned up. This means that you have until 10:28 to influence my planning.
3) At 10:30 I will impart the result of my meticulous planning to the gathered paddlers.
4) Shortly after 10:30 we will get on the water and paddle.
5) Sometime later we will stop on a beach for a snack. For me this will take the form of a flask of coffee and a cereal bar. You can indulge in whatever you fancy but we probably won’t have time for a 3-course banquet.
6) Even later still we will return to Mount Batten, aiming to arrive around 12:30.
7) Put gear away, get changed, say fond farewells and wend my jolly way home with paddlers grateful thanks ringing in my ears. Please note:
a) The BBC weather forecast for Saturday states that there will be sunny intervals and a moderate breeze, and that temperatures will be a cool 8 degrees. A pleasant enough day for our less experienced paddlers to have a stress-free bob around the sound.
b) Predicted high water at Devonport is 4.7 metres at 09:12.
c) No adrenalin was expended in the creation of this post.
d) I’m not expecting a lot of adrenalin to be expended in the execution of my meticulous paddling plan.
e) You may be reading this and thinking that I have far too much time on my hands, if so, just remember that you are reading this.To sum up, short paddle, sat 2 March, on the water at Mount Batten at 10:30, back approx. 12:30. Bring a snack
See you on Saturday.

Adam CoulsonKeymasterClive in scientific papers it is conventional to write the abstract at the top – for very good reason!

ParticipantWell, I’ve had some feedback on my latest literary masterpiece, from no other than our highly esteemed president no less, I am very honoured but I do feel the need to respond.
Firstly, I am not a scientist and I don’t pretend to have submitted a scientific paper, hence I see no problem with failing to follow scientific protocol. Secondly, I have invested a lot of time and effort into cultivating a “mildly eccentric” image, blindly following someone else’s conventions would undermine the years that I have spent carefully manipulating of people’s perceptions.
Having said all that I readily accept Adam’s point that putting my summary at the top would have been far more useful, but that wouldn’t have been so much fun and fun is what it’s all about.
