TerryCParticipantSaturday Rec Paddle 14th Oct
The rec paddle will be from Mount Batten. Normal on the water time of 10:00. The weather is looking much like recent weeks with a bit of a breeze and hopefully staying dry.
Please post if you are thinking of coming along and bring all of your usual paddling and safety kit. Don’t forget lunch and a hot drink.

AnonymousInactiveHi Terry, cheers for today, good opportunity to have half-decent conversation with fellow paddlers, plus a kingfisher!!!
October 14, 2017 at 8:09 pm #6678
EMUParticipantWe saw a kingfisher between Cawsands and Penlee today. Is it unusual to see them on the sea?
October 15, 2017 at 8:08 am #6679
TerryCParticipantIt’s not unusual to see Kingfishers along the coast. I have seen several over the years. They must like the salt water as much as the rivers, a bit like some of our paddlers ๐

ParticipantEmu,
The RSPB site has this to say about kingfisher habitat.
Where to see them. (Kingfishers).
They are widespread, especially in central and southern England, becoming less common further north but following some declines last century, they are currently increasing in their range in Scotland. Kingfishers are found by still or slow flowing water such as lakes, canals and rivers in lowland areas. In winter, some individuals move to estuaries and the coast. Occasionally they may visit garden ponds if of a suitable size.
This is probably out of date because we often see kingfishers during estuary paddles and I can remember seeing one at Jennycliffe in September just after I joined the club. (Or am I confusing that with a pterodactyl? It was a long time ago.)Clive A
