ParticipantWhat would you be doing if it wasn’t for those wonderful people at Blackpool Sands (Devon) Utilities Co Ltd?
Well, thanks for asking but if it wasn’t for those wonderful people at Blackpool Sands (Devon) Utilities Co Ltd I would still be looking for somewhere to hold our midsummer(ish) camp, but thanks to those wonderful people at Blackpool Sands (Devon) Utilities Co Ltd I now have cunning a plan, a plan so cunning that when I reveal it you longer serving club members will have a sense of déjà vu.
I can exclusively reveal that we will park (free of charge) at Blackpool Sands car park, (that’s the Devon Blackpool Sands, not the Lancashire version) and paddle to Long Sands, grid SX920524, an approx distance of 6 miles. This is where we shall camp but those wanting a longer paddle can extend the trip to Durl Head (brilliant caves) and Berry Head, in total an extra 7 miles. We did exactly this trip 6 years ago.
For those who like to know about such things the camping at Long Sands has all the mod cons that you could possibly wish for, assuming that you wish for nothing. As the name implies there is sand, lots of it and it goes on for a long way. There are also rocks and cliffs but that’s just about it. We don’t have permission to camp on this beach but as there is no landward access I can’t imagine this being a problem.
You will have to bring everything you need for this trip with you, including food and water, and be prepared to take all your rubbish away with you.
I will post times etc nearer the date once we know what the weather gods are going to throw at us but in the meantime you should be aware that this is a sea kayak trip and that club boats are available for this trip. With equipment officer Pete away in foreign parts from 17 June (have a good time Pete) I will take bookings for the club sea kayaks. I already know about Alan Braidford’s request, any more to me please.
Thanks.

KeymasterAh first to reply. Will be our first Kayak camping trip. Started getting things out and then will see how much fits! Is there somewhere to plug in Karens hair straighteners? Does everybody take their own catering requirement/equipment? Might need to get some more dry bags – courtesy of Lomo. I will be up for longer paddle and I suspect Karen also if knee reasonably functional. I assume the sun will be shining. Looking forward, Adam 😀

You don’t need to bring catering requirement/equipment but if you don’t you will be hungry.
There are plenty of places for Karen to plug in her hair straighteners, most of which involve scaling the cliffs followed by a long walk.
Hope this helps.

InactiveDave rang about sharing lifts for Jane and himself. I could take one boat. Is there anyone else planning on going who could take another? Helga?

ParticipantWhat time is one expected to be on the water at Blackpool Sands. Yes I think I remember this to be a dandy location having the possibility of a well earned ice cream at the end of the trip and if you are desperate before going afloat.
I shall have to erect my tent to dry it out….
On Sunday at the West Cornwall Sea KayaK MEET took down my tent in a total downpour, the rain was hopping off my tent as I was hurriedly folding it up and putting it into a dry bag to avoid soaking the interior of my car.
Why am I telling you this, because I suppose I want you to know that spending a night in a wet tent ain’t heaven. So if I don’t have a somewhat dry tent I might chicken out of the above mentioned trip.
I am not sure I particularly enjoy camping, I don’t sleep well and I wake up with cramp. Yet here I am contemplating staying in the blessed thing for 2 weekends on the trot.
Sea Kayaking obviously defies logic, I find I am compelled to do strange things to get afloat in my kayak.Oh well let’s pray it’s not raining on Sat night, then I might consider a bivvy if the sand flies can leave me alone.

InactiveHello Jane. That tent of yours practically puts itself up, and the forecast is looking promising, so it should drip dry in no time.

ParticipantHi all,
The weather forecast is looking good for the weekend, yippee!!
Here is everything that you need to know about our midsummer(ish) camp.
Those using club boats please be at Mount Batten on Saturday morning in time to get them onto your transport and be away by 09:00.
Those going directly to Blackpool Sands please be ready to get on the water at 10:30. For those of you that need such things the postcode of Blackpool Sands is TQ6 0RG
We are not being charged for parking at Blackpool Sands. When you arrive let the attendant know that you are with the PPCA and he / she will direct you where to park. There is also a vintage car show over the weekend, make sure the attendant doesn’t get you mixed up with them! The paddle from Blackpool Sands to Long Sands, (our camp site), is approx 6 miles. We may or may not stop for lunch on the way; it just depends on how much rock-hopping / seal watching we do.
Those wishing to extend the paddle we can go to Berry Head. (Good caves on the way at Durl Head). This is approx 4 miles each way.
The camp site is a beach with no landward access. There is no vegetation on the beach so we will be camping directly on the sand. There are plenty of rocks to help with your guy line.
Other than sand, rocks and a whole load of salty water there are no facilities on Long Sands. So, no toilets, no water and definitely no restaurant or bar. You will need to bring everything you need with you and be prepared to take all your rubbish away with you. (Being hungry and / or uncomfortable is an alternative).
On Sunday we will simply paddle back to Blackpool Sands, arriving back mid day (ish). We will be off the water by lunch time.
How very exciting, see you there.
