    Hi all,

This is going to be long and complicated so the short version is that I intend to run the lower lower Dart, (Buckfast to Staverton) on Saturday 1 October. Meet at the Co-op car park in Ridgeway ready to leave at 09:00.

The long version is that I have the pleasure of running the first river trip of the new season. You will be aware that life has been a little arid lately and it will come as no surprise to learn that there isn’t a lot of water in the rivers at present. As I type this the river gauge at Austins Bridge is a rocky 0.35m, but there is rain forecast for Friday and I am hopeful that we can paddle somewhere, probably the lower lower Dart because this needs the least amount of water to make it viable.

To complicate thing further Sunday sees the annual raft race which takes place on the same stretch of river. To avoid getting mixed up with their fun and games I will run the club trip on Saturday 1 October, meeting at the Co-op car park in the Ridgeway, Plympton ready to leave at 09:00. For those that need such things the postcode of the Co-op is PL7 2AW. (There is another Co-op at Chaddlewood, you can go there if you like but you will be lonely.)

This is still dependant on river levels.

Those of you that are going to use club boats will need to have collected them prior to the day. No-one will be going to Mount Batten on Saturday morning.

In case you are wondering why we don’t run the Tamar instead its because the fishing season doesn’t close on the Tamar for another couple of weeks. The club ran a trip on the Tamar early last season and got an un-friendly reception from the angling fraternity. The Tamar is my least favourite river and running it with anglers shouting at me holds very little appeal.

If you are intending to come along can I ask that you let me know please?

Finally, canoes, otherwise known as open boats, are welcome on this trip on the understanding that I hold no canoeing qualification and can only provide safety cover. Canoeists will need to be of a suitable skill level and will need to provide their own boats etc.

Well, I’m not really sure what the level will be like tomorrow. I will have another look in the morning to make a decision then. Sorry it’s all a bit up in the air but I will post by 08:00,

Loads of water this morning. We’ll meet as planned, go to Buckfast and decide where to paddle.

    See you soon
