Follow this link to read more about the new coach-training system that British Canoeing introduced this year: https://www.britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/level-2-coach-award/

They describe three levels of coach: paddlesport instructor (equivalent to previous level 1); coach award (previous level 2); and performance coach (previous level 3).

For more detail on the coach award (aka level 2), see the pdf at this page: https://www.britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/wp-content/files/British_Canoeing_Coach_Award_Course_Guide_V1-2_Jan18.pdf

If I read it right, the coach award takes a minimum of eight days’ training and assessments. It includes the new leader award in the discipline you want to focus on (white water, sea kayaking, polo, slalom, etc) as an integral part of the system.

Although there has been talk of BC’s approach to coach training being increasingly aimed at commercial coaches, a professional coach and guide in Cornwall who I spoke to recently said he thought this was a practical and more flexible way forward and would be as useful to people wanting to be volunteer club coaches as it would be to those wanting to go into the coaching business. Time will tell.
