ParticipantHi all
I’m down to run the white water river trip this Sunday, 24 November.
There is some rain in the forecast so hopefully levels will be good for a beginners trip.
I have a mind to go and run the river Barle from Tarr Steps to Dulverton on Exemoor. Here are the pros and cons of running the Barle.
1) The Barle is a small river that lends itself to small groups. We haven’t had any big groups this year so that shouldn’t be a problem.
2) The Barle is a grade 2 river and is thus suitable for our beginners.
3) The club haven’t run the Barle since 2007 and I can’t remember much about it. It will be like a new river to myself and will be a new river to all of you. Experienced paddlers can test their river reading skills by getting out in front and leading for a bit.
4) The drive to Dulverton is 75 miles that takes approx 1.5 hours. The drive from Dulverton to Tarr Steps is a further 6 mile. If we run the Barle it will be a long day out.
5) We would have to take lunch to eat on the river. The forecast is for mild temperatures this weekend so that should be OK.
Well, that’s a lot of writing isn’t it? You’ve read all about it now I need your input. Do you want to run the Barle or would you rather stay local and run the Lower Dart? I know your don’t really care and will “go with the flow” but I would like you to get off the fence and state a preference please.
I will post on Friday with a decision.
Open boats.
Club members who wish to come on this trip in open boats are welcome on the understanding that they have had some previous white water open boat experience and can provide their own equipment. I hold no open boat qualifications and as such can only provide safety cover.Clive A.

ParticipantHi Clive,
I’m planning to come along. Since it’s a beginners trip would you mind if I brought 1 or two uni students continuing the mission to get more of a relationship going.
I don’t mind where but since you wanted a definitive answer, I’d rather stay local and avoid the drive.

ParticipantHi Clive,
Sorry, I can’t make this weekend.
The Barle trip sounds lovely though and if you make it, I hope you all have a great time.
Have fun wherever you paddle.

ParticipantRight boys and girls, the consensus is to stay local so we will run the Lower dart. Meet at the Co-op car park in Plympton ready to leave at 09:00. Those wishing to meet at the river meet at Salmon Steps cafe at 09:30.
See you on Sunday.

ParticipantJohn,
didn’t you run the lower last time? It’s the usual beginners river so I’m assuming it would be fine unless there is a deluge on Sunday morning!

ParticipantHi John
The plan is to run a beginners trip on Sunday. There is a fair bit of rain in the forecast and river levels wont be low, but equally they shouldn’t be too high either. We wont know what the levels are for sure until we are looking at the river on Sunday morning, its all down to how much rain falls and the timing of that rainfall, but that is the way of river paddling. In the mean time its reasonable to assume that this trip will be suitable for you and for any other white water beginners that are considering coming along.
Good question though, thanks for asking.

ParticipantI have just remembered that I am out on a friends 50th birthday celebration tonight.
Still hoping to make the paddle but if I’m not there in the morning you will know why……
