ParticipantHi all
Thanks to Karen & Caseyโs comments on a previous thread, and to Ken for taking the time to pick up the phone to speak to me in the old fashioned way, we are going to try and run both a beginners and an intermediate river trip this Sunday, 27 November.
I am going to run the beginners trip and Ken is going to run the intermediate trip. We will all congregate at Plympton B&Q ready to leave at 09:00. You will need to take care that the people in your car intend doing the same trip as you are!
I will need some help with coaching / safety cover for the beginners trip. Volunteers let me know please.
If you are coming along to either of these trips can you let us know please so that we can ensure suitable levels of help.
Club member who wish to come on the beginners trip in open boats are welcome on the understanding that they have had some previous white water open boat experience and can provide their own equipment. I hold no open boat qualifications and as such can only provide safety cover.
Obviously this is all dependant on there being enough water in the river.

ParticipantHi. I will be there if the water level is sufficient (supposed intermediate but have probably forgotten since that rock strew paddle with John and Julie on the last few features of the upper some weeks ago).

KeymasterWell I shall paddle in a river if enough water to do so. Will take the plunge ( ๐ and start my season with an intermediate. This weekend I will be triple checking my kit so as to ensure nothing essential left at home (like dry suit). However I am flexible and don’t mind doing beginners if balance of numbers a problem. Alternatively do staggered starts so Loop followed by Lower with a walk around Holne Weir (if stories of Doug’s escapade anything to go by!)
Many thanks to coaches for responding to feedback,
Adam

Some time ago, (some years ago actually), I paddled the Severn Bore with Ken and a few others. It was March and there was ice on the ground. Ken had left his cag behind so he paddled in a tee shirt. No dry suit? Man up I say.

InactiveAndy urged me to comment here. Myself and Heather are pretty keen for a beginner whitewater trip but can’t make it this week unfortunately! Heather is also a little shakey in her new boat so we need to get out on the water once or twice before committing to a trip and we’ve never even seen the Dart before!
As I said to Andy, I hope these beginners winter trips don’t fizzle out before we become available ๐

ParticipantI will be along Clive/Ken,
I don’t mind what I do so if you want me to help on the beginners I am happy to do that. Like Andy if you have enough helpers for that trip I will do Ken’s trip.

ParticipantBeginners trip.
Looking at the Austin Bridge gauge there will almost certainly be enough water for the beginners trip to go ahead. We will run either the Lower Dart or the section below Buckfast that I have called the Baby Dart, or Lower Lower Dart. I will decide on the day.
Andy, you are very welcome to join me. Out of interest will you be in your kayak or open boat?
Harvey & Heather, if you think you need more time to get acquainted with your boats then may I suggest joining the Saturday rec paddle? These can be a gentle or as wild as you care to make them, there is usually some scope for rock hopping on these trips so just turn up, look around and if needed ask for help / advice. Those of us who indulge in rock hopping would love to watch your skills improve.
Big Al, I will let you choose what you do.

ModeratorIntermediate Trip
Well it started at .63 on the Austin Bridge gauge at 0400 hrs and dropped to .61 at 1600 hrs today Friday so if it continues to drop at this rate we should just about be able to do the Loop but my minimum for this is .54 so keep your fingers crossed. It will still be a bump and a scrape but there are a couple of places to play. I will update this at about 1800hrs tomorrow evening Saturday. ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐

ModeratorThe level is now .60 at 0400 hrs this morning so the Loop paddle will be on.
See you all in the morning ๐ ๐ ๐

KeymasterApologies but I won’t be there this morning.
Woken up and I can barely walk as my knee is so painful again.

Sorry to hear about your knee, probably too much kneeling in those open boats. You missed a good one today.
