ParticipantHi all,
I’m running the beginners river trip this Sunday, 11 Oct.
You will be aware that it has rained this week but there is not a lot of rain forecast for the rest next few days. Assuming this to be correct the result will be a fairly low river, which in turn will make the flow fairly slow. Ideal for the complete white water novice.
My intention at the moment is to run the Lower Dart, (Holne to Buckfast). We will meet at Plympton B&Q in time to sort out boats etc and be ready to leave at 09:00.
We will stop part way down the river for a break, so bring something with you packed in such a way that it won’t get wet.
As it says in the very excellent newsletter and in Ken’s piece last week the minimum equipment required is boat (with air bags), paddle, spray deck, helmet & buoyancy aid. You will also need suitably warm clothing. The ability to smile is always a useful attribute.
If you are intending to come along can I ask that you either post a reply here or contact me on 01752 344425 or cliveandjoy01@gmail.com
The only daft question is the one that isn’t asked, so if you have a query please ask away.
I will post again on Saturday evening to confirm arrangements.
How ‘citing.

ParticipantHi Clive.

KeymasterHi Clive. I’d like to give fresh water a go, but as an absolute beginner. And if I can still manage a smile at Buckfast, might even do it again! Roughly what time do you expoect to be back at Plympton, as we need to put in a maternal visit on Sunday evening.
Looking forward – yes ‘citing! Adam

InactiveHi Clive,
I would very much like to join you on Sunday – I’ll do my best to smile – but as a beginner might be concentrating far too much – might be more of a grimace. See you before 9 at B&Q

ParticipantWell boys and girls, those of you that watch such things will have noticed that the river levels are very similar to those of last week when Ken cancelled the beginners’ trip. For my part I have been to look at Broken Weir and Island Rapid and accept that whilst there are plenty of rocks I think there is enough water to make this a useful trip for the complete beginner. You experienced paddlers are old enough, ugly enough and who knows, maybe even wise enough to make your own decisions but this week’s trip will go ahead.
So, meet at Plympton B&Q ready to leave at 09:00. Those of you that want to meet at the river be at the lay by opposite the no longer trading Mogul Palace at 09:30.
If there are any experienced open boaters who want to come along you will be welcome on the understanding that I can only provide safety cover, you need to be able to look after yourselves and you craft.
I mentioned smiling in my previous post because in my experience paddlers who spend a lot of time smiling tend to spend less time capsizing, so look at it as a coaching tip.
Not exciting, but should be fun all the same.
See you tomorrow,
Clive A.

I didn’t answer your question on my previous post because I wanted you to have a post all to yourself. (Yes OK, I forgot).
Anyway, timings are fairly fluid but we can usually expect to be back in Plympton at approx 15:00.

Well done to our 2 white water novices, good work.
Welcome to the 2 members (Patrick & Jon) that I hadn’t met before, hope to see you both again soon.
Finally, who’d have thought that Pete would win the “fish of the day” award, you had to be there.
See you next time
