Frequently Asked Questions

Kayak or canoe?

A kayak is a boat with a closed deck, with a cockpit where you sit and use a double bladed paddle. A canoe is an open boat that you sit or kneel in and use a single bladed paddle.  For the more recreational activities on gentle water, the canoe may be your first choice.

Will I get wet?

Canoeing is a wet sport. Be sure to bring a change of clothes with you to wear afterwards. You might stay dry during most of the session, but you will get wet! Before you venture onto the water, be sure to take off anything precious such as watches and jewellery (including ear rings). If you wear spectacles, they need to be secured to you somehow so that if they fall off, you don't lose them.

Can I join without the 1-star award?

For full membership you need to have completed the BCU 1-star award or equivalent. The introductory membership offers an opportunity to gain these basic skills. Existing paddlers with experience but no 1-star award will also be considered, subject to review.
