Kayaks in the surf

Surfing in kayaks is very popular in the PPCA. Our proximity to the sea allows frequent and easy access to good surfing conditions. Members go surfing every weekend and some have been in the British Kayak Surf Squad.

The nearest surf spots are at Bigbury and Bantham on the South Coast, about 15 miles East of Plymouth. They provide a variety of surf conditions depending on the tide and wind. Bantham is popular, with steep waves around low tide and green waves at high tide with a good swell. These beaches do not always provide surf but can provide excellent fun for kayaks on many occasions through the year.

For more consistent surf levels, many PPCA paddlers go the North Devon coast to such spots as Widemouth which is South of Bude, and to Polzeath. The surf is generally bigger on the North Coast but can suffer from a lack of 'shoulders' giving short rides for kayaks with a powerful 'dump'.

There are always people going surfing. If you want to join us, get in touch.
